In this TED Talk about heart disease, C Noel Bairey Merz, MD talks about how more women die of heart disease than men. Ted Talk #2: How your emotions change the shape of your heart
What if I told you that the title of the movie "The Broken Hearts Gallery" could be taken quite literally. In this TED Talk Sandeep Jauhar explains how the term "heartbroken" exists for a reason. He explores how grief and various emotional responses have a big impact on our hearts. Our hearts can even change shapes in response to fear, grief, trauma and quite literally break due to emotional heartbreak, such as a big breakup. He explains how taking care of your mental health is more important than we thought because it could reflect badly on our most vital organ, the heart. After listening to Dr. Jauhar, you will understand how important it is to be able to care for our mental healths and that going to therapy and taking care of yourself shouldn't be so stigmatized. It's ok to take mental health days, if only we would've known it affects our hearts earlier, maybe there wouldn't be such stigma against depression and psychological disorders. Physical manifestations of illness shouldn't be the only valid reason to take a day off.
Dr. Sandeep Jauhar is a practicing cardiologist and a New York Times bestselling author. He has written three books about the medical field and the risks that doctors and patients go through everyday in this field. His second book was a New York Time bestseller and was named a New York Post best book of 2014. His first book was a national bestseller and got optioned by NBC to be a dramatic television series.
Hi! I looked at your blog, and I think it is very well done and interesting. Also, I listened to the Ted Talk you are referring to in this post, and I have to admit it is amazing to see that heart diseases in women are being researched. I think it is wonderful that, after a lot of years, we are finally trying to understand the differences between heart diseases in men and women. I cannot wait to see the results of the studies and tests that the doctor and her colleagues are doing! It is certain that I will come back to see your next posts!
ReplyDeleteHi Alexane, thank you so much for taking a look at my blog! I'm glad to see that my articles help get important information out there. I'm glad people finally woke up and decided to focus their research on women's health!
DeleteWOW! I don't know which TED Talk is my favorite, William. You chose them so well! I also have to agree with Alexane, it is about time that someone finally noticed the stark difference in symptoms between men and women. It will aid many in curing/preventing heart diseases. Your second TED Talk also shocked me, as I knew that our mental health affected our body/organs, but to literally have a broken heart, who knew it was possible? Wonderful findings, my dear!
